Designing Biofeedback for Games and Playful Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
During the last three years we have developed several prototypes of biosignal adaptive games and playful applications. We have been primarily using pulse, heart-rate intervals (HRV), skin conductance (EDA) and respiration as adaptation sources (RESP), but we have also experience in real-time analysis of more demanding signals such as electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG). Our applications range from desktop to mobile and from single user to multiuser setups. One of the core research questions in our studies is to understand how the biofeedback mechanisms have impact on psychophysiological responses and how implicit and explicit biofeedback differs from each other. In our future studies we are going to explore inter-subject synchrony and related biofeedback effects in co-located collaborative games and applications. This position paper for CHI 2010 workshop “Brain, Body and Bytes: Psychophysiological User Interaction” describes briefly our previous research efforts, our methodologies, and our future research directions.

Heart-pulse Biofeedback in Playful Exercise using a Wearable device and Modular Interactive Tiles
We developed a playful biofeedback system using a wearable device and modular interactive tiles. In this approach we suppose that patients could regulate exercise intensity on t heir own through biofeedback. We propose biofeedback play system called “bioToys” based on exercise with the modular interactive tiles. The system consists of a wearable device that measures heart-pulse via ear-mounted ...

Background and Aims: The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy and usability of human-computer interface in cervical spinal cord injury with two computer games based and EMG biofeedback. Methods: The sample size was 20 participants (healthy and spinal cervical lesions) who were selected as available. The statistical population of the study was spinal cord injury patients referred t...
متن کاملUnderstanding Playful User Experience through Digital Games
It has been commonly acknowledged that the acceptance of a product depends on both its utilitarian and non-utilitarian properties. The non-utilitarian properties can elicit generally pleasurable and particularly playful experiences in the product’s users. Product design needs to improve the support of playful experiences in order to fit in with the users’ multi-faceted needs. However, designing...
متن کاملIntegrating Serious Games in the Educational Experience of Students with Intellectual Disabilities: Towards a Playful and Integrative Model
The purpose of this paper is to present a series of observations made by researchers and educators on the integration of serious games in the educational experience of users with intellectual disabilities (ID). Data were gathered from four different studies and different games were used, in order to identify a successful model of games based learning application. Moreover, results that highligh...
متن کاملIf Only... - Designing Novel Games for Collaborative Learning with Smartphones and Sensors
In this project we describe research into playful learning experiences featuring smartphones and external sensors. We built and tested a number of games which can be played using environments populated with sensors and/or actuators interfaced wirelessly with smartphones. An overall story interlinking the games was developed based on the need for action to tackle climate change. Trials with teen...
